CMC Scholarship FAQs
-For Scholarship application please fill out the Google form here. Deadline to apply is FEB 28.
-Scholarship audition will be held on MAR 22nd at 2PM at Myers Park Presbyterian Church. Physical address is 2501 Oxford Place Charlotte, NC 28207.
-The Scholarship Winners Recital will be held on MAR 29th at 7PM. This will take place at Southern Park Music School.
-Scholarship winners are REQUIRED to perform and teachers are REQUIRED to attend and support their students
Scholarship Eligibility: In order to receive award, both teacher and student must be present at Winners Recital
-Student must be resident of Mecklenburg County OR study with a teacher in Mecklenburg County
-Student or Teacher must complete online application and pay application fee by February 28 deadline
-Teacher must complete CMC application and pay application fee by February 28 deadline (if not CMC member already)
Audition Guidelines:
-Previous 1st place winners not eligible for 1st place in same scholarship
-Winners required to perform at Charlotte Music Club Winners Recital
-Teachers of winners are required to attend the Charlotte Music Club Winners Recital
-All scholarships open to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.
Scholarship Categories and Awards:
-Piano, Voice, Strings, Woodwinds, Brass
-Winner: $500 (1 winner per grade/per instrument)
-Specific repertoire requirements for each category/instrument below:
PIANO SCHOLARSHIP
CHARLOTTE MUSIC CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
ELIZABETH W. HUGHSTON SCHOLARSHIP
Three selections are required, one from each group. All selections are to be performed by memory.
I. A Baroque work of at least the difficulty of a Bach 3-part Invention or a movement from a Classical sonata or an equivalent composition.
II. A composition by a distinguished composer of the Romantic period.
III. A composition by a distinguished composer of the Contemporary period.
CHARLOTTE MUSIC CLUB VOICE SCHOLARSHIP
Three selections are required, one from each group.
All selections are to be performed by memory.
Performers must provide their own accompanist if accompaniment is needed. No recorded accompaniment is allowed.
I. An opera aria, or sacred work from an oratorio, Mass, or cantata, or a comparable sacred work.
II. An art song (French, German, Italian, or Spanish) performed in the original language.
III. A song by a distinguished 20th century composer.
CHARLOTTE MUSIC CLUB STRING SCHOLARSHIP (violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, guitar)
Three selections are required, one from each group.
Students are urged to play from memory.
Bowed strings: one selection from Group II or Group III must be accompanied. This is not required for harp and guitar.
Performers must provide their own accompanist if accompaniment is needed. No recorded accompaniment is allowed.
I. Harp or Guitar: an etude; Bowed Strings: A composition demonstrating the ability to play unaccompanied.
II. A movement from a Baroque or Classical composition.
III. A composition from the Romantic or Contemporary period.
CHARLOTTE MUSIC CLUB WOODWIND SCHOLARSHIP (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon)
Two selections are required, one from each group.
Students are urged to play from memory.
Performers must provide their own accompanist if accompaniment is needed. No recorded accompaniment is allowed.
I. A composition from the Baroque or Classical period.
II. A composition from the Romantic or Contemporary period.
CHARLOTTE MUSIC CLUB BRASS SCHOLARSHIP (trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba)
Two selections are required, one from each group.
Students are urged to play from memory.
Performers must provide their own accompanist if accompaniment is needed. No recorded accompaniment is allowed.
I. A composition from the Baroque or Classical period.
II. A composition from the Romantic or Contemporary period.
